「How to Assemble a Human Genome? Mix generous amounts of Junk DNA and Indifferent DNA, add a Dollop of Functional DNA and a Sprinkling of indifferent DNA (Malicious DNA optional)」

Prof. Dan Graur (University of Houston)

「Adaptation toward the dead-end? Effects of captive environment on natural reproduction of fish」

Prof. Hitoshi Araki (Hokkaido University)

Ex-situ conservation of endangered species is not only a controversial subject in conservation biology but also of broad interest in evolutionary biology because it can be considered as a real-time experiment of adaptation to a distinct environment. Here I summarize recent studies on reproductive fitness of captive-reared salmonid fish species, including both our own and other researchers’ updates. I also discuss some preliminary results on captive-reared brown trout (Salmo trutta) in Switzerland, which provide us a clue to the cause of radical fitness decline of captive-reared fish in the wild.
